Remembering Princess Diana 1961-1997

Diana Princess of Wales died from serious injuries in the early hours of August 31 1997 after a terrible car crash in Paris. Her tragic death led to a huge outpouring of grief among the British people who are now remembering the beloved royal 20 years on. Ahead of the 20th annivesary of the Princess Diana's death next month, here is a look back at her life in pictures.

This photograph shows the young Lady Diana Spencer in her pram at Park House on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk in 1963.

Diana grew up on estate but she moved to Althorp in Northamptonshire when her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer in 1975.

Diana, just 19, looks pensive and shy in this photograph taken at the kindergarden where she worked in Pimlico, London, in 1980. 

The future princess met Prince Charles at a garden party in 1977 through her older sister Sarah, who he was dating at the time.

Crowds of people lined the streets in London and an estimated 750 million viewers watched the fairytale wedding on television.

The royal couple introduced their newborn son Prince William to the world from the steps of St Mary's Hospital in London in June 1982.

Diana gave birth to William’s younger brother Harry just over two years later in September 1984.

This iconic image shows Diana sitting by herself at the Taj Mahal, while Prince Charles attended a business meeting Bangalore in February 1992.

The poignant photograph at the “monument of love” signalled that Diana and Charles were drifting apart. 

The royal couple announced their separation nine months later. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1996.

Diana and Dodi Fayed were killed in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. 

Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "She was the people's princess and that is how she will stay, how she will remain in our hearts and our memories for ever."
